Bright colour is a joyful thing. Be it a tropical maxi dress or purple trainers, wearing colour can be the sartorial equivalent of a double shot of espresso.

When it comes to makeup, a sweep of punchy lipstick lifts both the spirits and an outfit. But with the putting on and taking off of masks now firmly in the mix, lipstick wearing has become a tad hazardous. If you fancy a pop of cheering colour – minus the mask smudges – here are some extremely easy, mask-friendly options…

Bright liner

If unused to sporting colourful eyeshadow, going full-throttle with lid colour can feel quite a leap.

A slim line of bright liner adds playful colour without too much drama.

Wings are entirely optional (so many people say to me they don’t wear liner because they can’t be faffed with a flick – flick-less liner is fine!); for a simple contemporary look try lining the outer two thirds of the bottom lash with a coloured pencil. Flick outwards if desired. Add mascara top and bottom to finish.

I like a pencil or gel crayon, and regularly use ones from Glossier, Barry M, Charlotte Tilbury and Marc Jacobs.

Bright eyeshadow also works great as liner when applied with a fine liner brush (such as MAC 210 Precise Liner Brush or Bobbi Brown Ultra Precise Eyeliner Brush). Dampen brush first for more intense colour.

Coloured mascara

Coloured mascaras have come a long way since since Revlon introduced them in 1960.

Us ‘80s kids may associate them with roller discos and Wham album covers (both excellent IMO), but a coloured lash can look modern and fresh when worn with neutral makeup and a sheer base. You can also simply coat the lower lashes in colour, and do the top ones black.

Many brands do coloured mascaras: Benefit’s excellent electric blue BADgal BANG! is ever-popular, Ciate have some seriously poptastic shades, find sophisticated inky blues and deep purples at Shiseido and By Terry, and head to Kiko for a range of coloured mascaras that cost little more than a fiver.

Wash of shadow

Don’t let all the laborious Insta blending put you off eyeshadows. They do not have to be a complicated thing. A simple light wash of a bright colour can be cheerful and effortless.

Pick a shade and a decent shadow brush (Zoeva and Real Techniques do great affordable ones). Lightly coat the brush in the shadow; gently tap the side of the handle to get rid of any excess that might otherwise make its way down your face. Sweep the brush over the lid. Job done. Run a touch more along the lower lash line if you fancy.

Some of my favourite single shadows are from MAC and NARS.

Lip and cheek duo

If nano seconds are all you have, a chunky pritt-stick-style lip and cheek colour is an extremely useful item. Dab on lips, cheeks and even eyelids if you feel so inclined. They are a cinch. They tend to be more balm-like than lipsticks – a gesture of colour – so potential smudging less treacherous.

Ones I like include: Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek, NARs The Multiple and Makeup Obsession Cheek & Lip Tint Duo Stick.

Longwear lipstick

If lipstick is resolutely your thing, there’s an increasing number of long-wear formulas.

If using a traditional bullet-style matte lipstick, it can be helpful to prime lips first with a touch of concealer, then line and fill in with a lipliner similar to the natural colour of your lips. Apply lipstick, blot, and repeat. If budget allows, the Pat McGrath Labs Matte Trance Lipstick, shade Elson 2, is one powerful red lip (and the packaging a thing of beauty).

Liquid lipsticks have excellent staying power. For some seriously vibrant lips, try NARS Powermatte Lip Pigment in Light My Fire (hot orangey red), Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid in Romantic (bright fuchsia pink) and Chanel Rouge Allure Ink Fusion in True Red (pillar box red).
