Describe yourself in a few key words…
Authentic, determined, compassionate.
What brought you to become an Image Consultant?
I’ve been an editor for a number of years, working my way from a trainee onto the newsdesk. When I started, everything was very ‘corporate’.
No one teaches you HOW to dress for the office. As a result, women spend way too much time and money on clothes that don’t suit them and they feel awkward in the office when they should feel confident! Consequently, they talk themselves out of rooms they deserve to be in and don’t always speak up when they could absolutely OWN the room.
I’ve always loved clothes and getting dressed and managed to navigate the tightrope between dressing for corporate and dressing for myself. I set out to prove that you don’t have to apologise for who you are; you can smash your goals, be ambitious, care about current affairs AND love sequins and print.
One of my very first editors told me he thought I was ‘too into fashion’ to be a serious journalist… a couple of years later he promoted me to his job.
I think it’s really important we encourage women to step into the high-level positions they DESERVE. And part of the work of a personal stylist is helping them own their talents and their power.
When I started posting my outfits and style advice on social media, I was getting messages from women asking things like ‘I’ve got an interview, what do I wear?’ or ‘how do I mix the things I love into my work wardrobe?’
I also had women asking me to style them for brand imagery. Being a magazine editor, I have an eye for detail, know which colours ‘pop’ and how you can embody your brand.
I LOVED helping them and seeing them shine and so I qualified as a personal stylist so I could offer the service on a formal basis.
What do you love most about your job?
I believe every woman should feel beautiful and unapologetic in her unique style. My job is to give her the confidence and the know-how so she can go and live her biggest, best, boldest life. Seeing that transformation happen is truly special. Styling isn’t even really about clothes; it’s about confidence.
Who have you worked with that compliments what you do?
My work as an editor really marries well with styling. As well as my Style Edit, I also offer media strategy sessions. There is also the option to have both personal styling AND media strategy with me. This is popular with women entrepreneurs who need guidance on getting their story out there and confidently owning all the incredible things they’ve achieved.
What inspires you?
WOMEN! I’m one of three girls and my sisters are my best friends. I feel like I grow so much from conversations with women. I’ve been so lucky to meet lots of amazing women through my work and through social media. When we work together, amazing things can happen.
One of my philosophies in life is that the biggest investment you can make is in yourself and you should never stop growing and learning. Consequently I draw lots of inspiration from podcasts, books, webinars, coaching. If I was to list all the women who inspire me, I’d be here all day! I love learning from not only the women around me – who are doing amazing things and don’t even realise – but women like Glennon Doyle (I will often buy copies of Untamed for my clients. It’s magic)
How would you describe your personal style?
Colourful, sparkly, sassy! I try and ensure that when I buy something, I WILL wear it and really love it. I don’t believe in saving anything ‘for best.’ So if I feel like wearing a fancy dress one day and jeans the next, I will.
Tell us 3 things about yourself we don’t know…
What is your style philosophy?
Don’t save anything for best! So many women have closets full of clothes for the ‘one day’ version of themselves. Be that woman TODAY. Treat yourself like someone whose opinion matters – it doesn’t matter if no one else sees you today; wear what you love for YOU.
