Styling the jazz age
By Jackie Woods
Our team of stylists recently worked together with the lovely and soulful jazz singer Victoria Klewin, lead singer of Victoria Klewin & The True Tones, on a recent photo shoot at Spirit Photographic studio in Bath. Her style inspiration for the shoot: all things vintage and styles from the 40s / 50s / 60s. Stylists Becky, Anna and Jackie pulled clothes and accessories from various vintage shops in Bristol and from their very own wardrobes and put together a series of fabulous looks for the shoot. Here’s a little peak at behind the scenes of the shoot. We’ve also caught up with Victoria to find out more about her own quirky style
Who is your style icon?
I absolutely adore Sarah Jessica Parker (and Carrie Bradshaw!) because I have curly hair and she is one of the only people that wears her hair curly. I also love Alex Chung’s relaxed but classy style.
Where do you get your style inspiration?
I love lots of vintage style and anything that makes me feel powerful, especially tribal prints and big jewelry or as my boyfriend calls it ‘hardwear’ – I use it like armour
What draws you to vintage style?
I’ve been obsessed with jazz and blues since I was 11 years old so I’ve always had that hankering to be in a different era – I also love the romanticness of another time!
How would you describe your style
Relaxed, fun, and quite quirky
What is the craziest thing in your wardrobe?
I’ve got a tartan vintage playsuit that I got from Camden. It’s definitely cool!
What are your favourite brands?
I’m literally obsessed with Temperly at the moment – everything they put on Instagram I like. I also really like Karen Millen because of my hourglass figure. I need a lot of structure and their dresses offer that.
What is your favourite piece in your wardrobe that you will never get rid of?
I have a brown long sleeved vintage lace piece that is from the 70s, maybe 80s. Its my favourite item and I even wore it for my album cover.
What has been your favourite look for a shoot or show?
I did a photo shoot in a vintage bus depot and I wore a really nice playsuit from Oasis that had a really nice print. I love those photos because it went so well with the old buses
Tell us about your inspiration for today’s shoot
The theme is vintage and one look I’m more keen to get is a more classic, Hollywood glamour that evokes that 50s 60s jazz diva
If you can have anyone’s wardrobe, who’s would it be?
Kate Winslet because I’m kind of similar to her hourglass and colouring
